Gold Coins vs Gold Bars in UAE: Which is Better for Investment?

19 May 2026 · 5 min read · Gold24.ae

Investment Gold in the UAE

The UAE is an excellent place to buy investment gold — there is no VAT on investment-grade gold (bars and coins with purity ≥ 99%), competition is fierce, and the DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) provides a well-regulated market with internationally recognised refiners. Both gold coins and bars are widely available, but they have different characteristics that suit different investors.

Gold Bars

Gold bars (also called bullion bars or ingots) are the most cost-efficient way to hold physical gold. Premiums over spot are lower than coins, typically 0.5–2% for large bars (100g+) and 1–3% for smaller bars (10g). The trade-off is lower divisibility — a 100g bar is a single unit that must be sold whole, or cut (which introduces authentication complications).

In UAE: DMCC-accredited refiners produce bars that are internationally recognised — Emirates Gold, PAMP Suisse, and Valcambi are common. These bars carry assay certificates and are easily resaleable globally. Available at licensed bullion dealers, some banks, and the Dubai Gold Souk.

Best for: Larger investment amounts (AED 10,000+), long-term holders, investors who prioritise low premium over flexibility.

Gold Coins

Gold coins carry higher premiums (typically 3–8% over spot for sovereign coins like the Krugerrand or Gold Britannia) due to their numismatic appeal, legal tender status, and the cost of minting. However, they offer superior divisibility — you can sell one coin at a time — and are globally recognisable, which helps with international resale.

In UAE: Popular coins include South African Krugerrands, British Gold Britannia, Austrian Philharmonic, and Canadian Maple Leaf. UAE-minted coins are also available. Some dealers also stock the UAE's own Gold Dinar. Gold coins are widely available in the Gold Souk.

Best for: Smaller investors, those wanting easy divisibility, collectors, and buyers who may need to liquidate internationally.

Recommendation

For most UAE-based investors, a mix works best: 100g or 250g bars for the core holding (lowest premium, easy storage), supplemented by a few 1oz sovereign coins for divisibility. If you're just starting out, a 10g or 20g bar from a recognised refiner is a low-friction entry point — available from AED 3,500–7,000 at current prices — with minimal making charges and easy resale anywhere in the UAE.
